An engagement ring is one of the most personal pieces of jewelry you'll ever give someone. So why should choosing one feel like picking something off a shelf?
A custom engagement ring gives you the opportunity to create something around the person who will actually wear it... their style, personality, story and the life you're building together.
And here’s something important to know before you begin:
You don’t need to know anything about diamonds, gemstones, or jewelry design to get started. You don’t need a finished sketch, know the difference between a bezel and a prong setting, or even know exactly what you’re looking for.
That’s what we’re here to help with.
At The W Gallery in Rocky River, Ohio, we help clients turn ideas, inspiration and stories into one-of-a-kind jewelry. If you're thinking about creating a custom engagement ring, here's how to get started.
Step 1: Start With Your Partner, Not the Ring
Before thinking about carats, settings or metals, think about the person who will wear the ring.
What jewelry do they already wear?
Do they gravitate toward yellow gold or white metals? Is their style clean and minimal, vintage, artistic, traditional or unconventional? Do they wear jewelry every day? Do they work with her hands?
Look at the pieces they choose for themself. This can tell you a lot.
You can also collect photos of rings you like, screenshots, Pinterest images or even inspiration that has nothing to do with jewelry. Architecture, nature, artwork, flowers, patterns and meaningful places can all inspire a custom design.
You're not looking for a ring to copy. You're discovering what you love about it.
Step 2: Establish a Comfortable Budget
You may have heard rules about how much you're "supposed" to spend on an engagement ring.
Forget the rules.
A good budget is simply an amount you're comfortable spending.
Having an honest budget actually helps the design process. It allows your jeweler to recommend stones, metals and design approaches that put your money where it will make the greatest difference.
Custom doesn't necessarily mean extravagant or prohibitively expensive. It means the ring is being designed intentionally for you.
Step 3: Choose the Center Stone
For many engagement rings, the center stone becomes the visual anchor of the entire design.
Diamonds remain a classic choice, but they’re far from the only one. Sapphires, rubies, and other gemstones can create an extraordinary engagement ring and introduce color and personality that you won’t necessarily find in a traditional jewelry case.
Whatever stone you’re considering, there are choices to make around shape, size, color, and other characteristics that influence both its appearance. If you’re considering a diamond, you’ll also have the choice between natural and lab-grown. You don’t need to make any of these decisions before your consultation. As part of the custom design process, we can help source stones and walk you through the options to find the right one for your ring.
Step 4: Think About Shape
Round stones may be the traditional standard, but today's engagement rings can be designed around an incredible variety of shapes.

Even the same gemstone can feel completely different depending on its shape and how it's oriented within the ring. This is one of the reasons designing the ring around the stone can be so much fun.
Sometimes you fall in love with the design first. Sometimes you fall in love with the stone and everything else follows.
Step 5: Choose Your Metal
Yellow gold offers a warm, timeless appearance. White gold creates a brighter, cooler look. Rose gold introduces warmth with a subtle pink tone. Platinum offers a naturally white appearance and excellent durability.
The right choice depends on personal style, the stones being used, the design of the ring and how it will be worn. One of the easiest clues is already in their jewelry box: what metal do they choose for themself?
Step 6: Design the Setting
This is where a custom engagement ring really begins developing its personality.
A ring might be understated and elegant with a simple solitaire setting. Another might incorporate a bezel, accent stones, unusual textures, hidden details or a completely unconventional arrangement.
A custom design can also incorporate meaning that isn't immediately obvious to anyone else. A birthstone hidden beneath the center stone, a meaningful symbol, an heirloom diamond or even a detail inspired by where you met.
The possibilities aren't limited to what's already sitting in a display case.
Step 7: Consider the Wedding Band
This is easy to overlook when you're focused on the engagement ring.
Eventually, another ring may need to sit beside it. Thinking about the wedding band during the design process can help determine the height, profile, shape and proportions of the engagement ring.
Some couples even choose to design the engagement ring and wedding band together.

Step 8: Give Yourself Enough Time
If you already know when you're planning to propose, tell your jeweler.
Custom jewelry takes time to design and create. More complex designs or projects requiring a specific gemstone can require additional time. Starting early gives you room to explore ideas instead of making decisions under pressure.
And don't worry if the proposal itself is supposed to be a surprise. We're accustomed to discretion.
How Can I Schedule a Custom Engagement Ring Consultation?
This part is easy. Just head to our custom design studio page HERE and take a minute to provide your contact information and we'll take it from there.
What Should I Bring to a Custom Engagement Ring Consultation?
Whatever you have.
That might be:
Photos or screenshots of rings you like - a Pinterest board - photos of jewelry they already wear - an heirloom ring or gemstone - a rough sketch...
A budget and your proposal date can be helpful to guide the consultation early.
You can also show up with almost nothing figured out.
“I want to propose, and I have no idea what I'm doing” is a perfectly acceptable place to start.
Create Something Unique
An engagement ring doesn't have to begin in a jewelry case. It can begin with a story.

You bring the story. We'll help you create the piece.
